flyvis Image Spectra
deShal3v (@deShal3v)
Asks of flyvis, the connectome-constrained model of the fly optic lobe (64 cell types over 721 columns, 45,669 graded neurons), the question Stringer et al. asked of mouse V1: how fast does the population variance spectrum fall off for natural images? Across 50 trained models the exponent sits near 1 on PCs 11 to 100, median 1.18. Unlike V1 it then collapses to 0.25-0.38 under whitened images in every one of the 50, while V1 stays near 1.03. Layer exponents track the photoreceptor input, a linearised copy reproduces them within 0.03, and at mouse-like single-trial noise cvPCA recovers nothing.
